wisdom-tooth350Do you have wisdom teeth that need to be removed? Wisdom tooth removal is a fairly common procedure, but for many people it can be a scary thought. The following is a quick guide on what to expect when having wisdom teeth extracted.

More often than not, you will have 4 wisdom teeth in total, one in each corner of the mouth. Because wisdom teeth are the last to grow, there is generally not much room for them to erupt, or come through the gums. As a result, they are commonly stuck part way through, or sideways. These are called impacted wisdom teeth.

People often ask if it will be painful to have wisdom teeth extracted. The answer is no! With modern dental technology there is no reason for this to be a scary or uncomfortable procedure.

Dr.Joslin will meet with you at GRAFT, her downtown Vancouver clinic. A large x-ray called a panoramic x-ray, will be taken to identify the position of your wisdom teeth. Dr.Joslin will assess the teeth and present options to you, outlining the risks and benefits of treatment. During your consultation, you will be given plenty of instructions for both before and after the procedure. This should help you to arrive feeling confident and ready on the day of the procedure.

In more than 90% of cases, conscious sedation is used to provide relaxation and pain control during wisdom tooth removal. Patients who have sedation do not remember the details of the procedure, and feel that it went much faster than it actually did. They are relaxed and often appear to be sleeping during the procedure.

After your wisdom tooth removal procedure, it’s important to get plenty of rest, maintain nutrition, and allow yourself some downtime. Dr.Joslin will contact you the day after your procedure to check on your progress and to make sure that your recovery is on course.
